Just a thought

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Wednesday, October 26, 2011,
A random thought about typing to a person--

 IF THIS IS CONSIDERED YELLING....

then wouldn't this be the same as whispering?

Think about it.

Fill the Cracks With Art

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Sunday, August 21, 2011, In : New Ideas

If you've ever walked down The Drag here in Austin, you might notice that sometimes the cracks in the sidewalk are filled with colored tiles, like little mosaics for passersby to see. There's not too many of them, but they do add a bit of color to the otherwise normal, drab cement. I think it would be really interesting to see little pictures on the tiles.

Amateur and professional artists and even little children, just whoever wants to, can take on the challenge of painting such a small tile p...

Electronic Kiosks

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Sunday, August 21, 2011, In : New Ideas

I know that Las Vegas and many other tourist attractions use a lot of electronic billboards, especially in their airports. UT uses similar bulletin screens at the Union, SAC, and lobby of the Communications building.

We have several outdoor kiosks around campus that people can staple their paper ads to. I know at least some of the kiosks are for student organizations only but there are many ads for roommates/housing, special events, jobs, etc. If you walk up to one of these kiosks, the papers ...

Keep Calm

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Sunday, August 21, 2011, In : Graphics

I just recently moved out of my house for the summer into my apartment for the fall. The girls who are moving into the house after me were bringing in their furniture and decorations when I noticed the famous "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster on the mantle. I had seen different variations of the poster and decided to make my own.

In this piece, my inspirations were the "Keep Calm" poster and the British 1st edition cover of my favorite book (besides Harry Potter!), George Orwell's classic, 1984,...

F is for Facebook

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Sunday, August 21, 2011, In : Graphics

Oh, how time passes when you're seeing what you're friends are doing on Facebook. Thank you Mark Zuckerberg, for creating the biggest distraction from homework. Guilty as charged! This site is procrastination station!

I wanted to create something vintage in Photoshop so I chose to play with The Scarlet Letter idea and make a vintage F to place on Mark Zuckerberg's shirt. I played around with different textures and blending options to make the F look like a vintage patch that is sewn on.

Social Media Nails

"Social media...let your fingers speak to the world"

From left to right: Blogger, Myspace, Twitter, FourSquare, LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Google+

While I was checking my Facebook and Google+ this evening, I noticed that my nail polish was chipping and decided that I should probably give myself a manicure this weekend. That's what inspired me to make this image. The hands/keyboard picture was taken from google, but I "painted" the nails in photoshop with the logos of the current most popular...

Be in the air, Not off the map

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Friday, July 22, 2011, In : New Ideas

Google+ has this nifty little feature called Hangout in which multiple people can video call, watch Youtube, and play games together. It's already serving as such a useful and efficient tool for group meetings when people are out of town for the summer.

Skype and other platforms have included 1-on-1 video calls for a while now. But we still can't talk or video chat with people on the ground when we're up in the sky on an airplane. Or well, we can video chat through the internet like on Skype, ...

Red=stop, Green=go

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Friday, July 22, 2011,

Who decided that red means stop and that green means go? If you're colorblind, you wouldn't be able to determine either one, so using those colors would seem relatively useless. What would you do if a traffic light was purple, orange, and turquoise, or some other colors that partially colorblind people can see? How confused would you be if you came to a stop sign like this?

Why Are Doorknobs Round??

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Thursday, July 21, 2011,

Why are doorknobs round?? Or really, why are there still doorknobs that are round? They're just so inconvenient!

If you've just put lotion on your hands, your hands will be sliding all over the knob, making it greasy and even harder to turn. You might become trapped in the room you're in until your hands dry up some or you find a more resistant cloth to turn the knob with.

Or, if you can't use your hands for some reason, like if you're carrying a big, heavy box, you have to deal with the hassle...

Thumbprints: the New ATM

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Thursday, July 21, 2011, In : New Ideas

If no two thumbprints are exactly alike, then is it possible to ditch the paper forms of IDs like your drivers license or passport and just use machines that scan your thumbprint or full hand?

What about holding your credit card information all on your thumbprint? If you wanted to buy something off Amazon, all you'd need to do is hold your thumb down on the keypad of your laptop in order to download your credit card information and verify your identification.

The police would easily download yo...

Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived... And Always Will.

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Thursday, July 21, 2011, In : Radio/TV/Film

Well, folks, it's over :*( The last movie installment of the Harry Potter series released last Friday, and for much of the boy wizard's fans, it is a bittersweet ending to the last 11 years of our childhood, worth of a sniffle and a tear or two.

There's no doubt that ever since 1998 when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released in the US (1997 in the UK) the story of the boy wizard has conjured up a very powerful spell on children and adults alike. With 389 million copies of the book...

The 90's are Back and They're Considered "Classic"!

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Thursday, July 21, 2011, In : Radio/TV/Film

This just in: TeenNick will be airing re-runs of "classic" 90's tv shows that premiered on Nickelodeon about 15 years ago, give or take 5 years. My fork was almost in my mouth before it dropped from my hand upon reading my friend's status post on Google+. The article can be found here

Some of the shows to be featured include Rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, and many others between midnight-4am. As if college students needed another reason to procrastinate and/or not sleep.

I, for one, w...

Racial stereotypes in Advertising

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Tuesday, July 19, 2011,

Last week, a co-worker of mine asked me to create a new logo for his mom's cleaning business. He told me exactly what he wanted the logo to look like and I said I'd have it done this weekend. I asked him what logo his mom had used before. He started talking about how he has a very loving mother who is an artist that specializes in oil paints so she had painted her own logo who was in no way racist and legitimately could not see a problem with the logo she had made.

The logo she had painted fea...

Good Product, Bad Packaging

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Saturday, July 16, 2011, In : Packaging

We see a lot of products being advertised really well, and maybe the product really is as great as they say, but sometimes, poor packaging can really hinder the effectiveness of the overall product. This in turn, can make buyers rethink their decision to repurchase because using the last remaining amounts of the product is inconvenient and nearly impossible.

Here are reviews on the packaging of 2 products I use daily. While I love both products, their packaging is a real nuisance. The first on...

A City of Inspiration

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Saturday, July 16, 2011, In : Graphics

I haven't made a blend in photoshop for a while and I got the idea last night when I was checking my work email. As a marketing intern for 512 Realty, I've worked with the 512 Realty logo millions of times, resizing, recoloring, and all sorts of fiddling around with it to incorporate it in the company's promotional materials. As I looked at the logo for the millionth time, I came up with the idea to create a blend that uses the actual buildings that logo was inspired by.

I thought that maybe w...

For every solution, a problem arises

Posted by Kayla Garcia on Saturday, February 12, 2011,
The other day, I was sitting in my management class and the topic of discussion was how managers can improve ethical behavior in the workplace. Some of the strategies mentioned included: roleplaying in order to train employees how to handle various problems, having outside companies and higher management come in to see how well the company is doing, and surveying the employees about their experiences such as if they have seen anyone cheating or if they are happy with the management.

My profes...
