This just in: TeenNick will be airing re-runs of "classic" 90's tv shows that premiered on Nickelodeon about 15 years ago, give or take 5 years. My fork was almost in my mouth before it dropped from my hand upon reading my friend's status post on Google+. The article can be found here

Some of the shows to be featured include Rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold, Rocket Power, and many others between midnight-4am. As if college students needed another reason to procrastinate and/or not sleep.

I, for one, wish I had a TV so that I could spend my summer late nights/early mornings quenching my nostalgic thirst for my younger years. While it would be much better to stream the shows at a time during the day, I doubt the late time slot would really hinder college students from watching anyway since many of them are still up for some reason or another until 2 am.

The network is playing on the idea that college-aged students who grew up in the 1990s are nostalgic about our childhoods. And we are. There are many Facebook groups dedicated to being a fan of 90s cartoons and most of those fans are in their late late teens to early 20s. It's funny to think that now, our good ol' Nickelodeon shows are considered "classic" just like when muuuch older shows like Golden Girls were re-run and our parents got excited. Our childhood cartoons are just as great to us as they were before.

Maybe it's a result of us Generation-Y kiddos growing up with rapidly changing technology. The internet and smartphones started at full force with us.  As much as we're in awe with the latest gadgets, we still remember the much simpler times and the shows we watched growing up.

It would be great if networks followed Nick's lead and re-run some of their older shows in their original formats. It's fine if the picture isn't quite hi-def! I'm a fan of the original make, meaning the exact same storylines and dialogues. I have no idea what generation of Pokemon or Power Rangers are airing these days, nor do I care. However, if the original Pokemon shows (where Ash Ketchum was only discovering the first original 150 Pokemon) or Mighty Morphin Power Rangers or Cartoon Network's Tunami line that had Sailor Moon, were airing today, you best believe I would be watching, and so would others my age.

I don't watch that much TV, but re-running all those shows would definitely be enough cause to create another color of category in my Google Calendar.
